Overview

The University of Bari Aldo Moro (Università degli Studi di Bari Aldo Moro, UniBa), founded in 1925 and named for Aldo Moro — the Italian Prime Minister kidnapped and murdered by the Red Brigades in 1978, who was a professor of law at this university and its rector — is one of southern Italy's largest and most important universities, ranked #501–600 in QS 2025. With 55,000+ students, it is the largest university in Puglia and one of Italy's ten largest universities. Bari — the capital of Puglia, the heel of Italy's boot — is a city of extraordinary character: the Basilica di San Nicola (built 1087 to house the relics of Saint Nicholas of Myra — the historical model for Santa Claus, his bones brought by Bari merchants from Myra in Asia Minor after the Arab conquest — one of southern Italy's most important Romanesque-Byzantine pilgrimage churches), the Bari Vecchia (the old city — a labyrinthine medieval quarter of narrow streets and ancient churches, where elderly women sit outside making orecchiette pasta by hand), and the Lungomare Nazario Sauro (the Mediterranean seafront promenade — 10 km of palms, sea, and Adriatic light). Puglia is Italy's most underrated region: extraordinary Norman, Byzantine, and Arab architecture (Castel del Monte — Frederick II's 13th-century geometric masterpiece, UNESCO-listed), the Valle d'Itria's trulli (the extraordinary beehive-shaped dry-stone houses of Alberobello — UNESCO-listed), and Italy's fastest-growing wine region (Primitivo, Negroamaro, Nero di Troia).
