Overview
La Trobe University, founded in 1964 and named after Charles Joseph La Trobe (Victoria's first Governor, 1851–1854), is a comprehensive Australian public research university ranked #465 in QS 2025. Based on its Bundoora campus (one of Melbourne's most beautiful, with 600+ hectares of natural bushland and wetlands hosting Australian wildlife including kangaroos, echidnas, and over 200 bird species), La Trobe has satellite campuses in regional Victoria (Bendigo, Shepparton, Wodonga, Mildura, and Albury) and in Sydney and Brisbane. La Trobe is particularly recognized for its research in health sciences (the Department of Biochemistry and Genetics at La Trobe is associated with multiple Nobel-adjacent discoveries), sports science (La Trobe is consistently Australia's top-ranked sports science program), agricultural sciences, and humanities. La Trobe has been one of Australia's leading universities for equity and diversity — consistently enrolling higher proportions of students from lower socio-economic backgrounds than comparable institutions.
