Overview
The Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad (IIT Hyderabad or IITH), established in 2008 as one of the 'second-generation' IITs (the wave of 8 new IITs created by the Indian government alongside the 7 legacy IITs), is among India's fastest-rising research universities and ranked #481 in QS 2025. IIT Hyderabad's rise is particularly notable given its youth: it was the first IIT to achieve a QS world ranking of sub-500 among the new IITs, thanks to aggressive research output growth and a distinctive liberal arts integration policy (IITH offers BS-MS dual degrees with humanities and social science components — unusual for an IIT). IIT Hyderabad is located near Hyderabad — the capital of Telangana state and India's rapidly growing tech capital, dubbed 'Hyderabad: City of the Future' or 'Cyberabad' for its massive technology sector. The HITECH City (Hyderabad Information Technology and Engineering Consultancy City) and the Financial District — where Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Apple, Facebook/Meta, and virtually every major global tech company has its India HQ or major operations — are 55 km from IITH's Kandi campus. Hyderabad's transformation from the 'City of Pearls' (centre of the Nizam's jewellery and pearl trade) to India's tech capital is directly supported by IITH talent output.
