Overview

The Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT Delhi or IITD), established in 1961 on a 320-hectare campus in Hauz Khas (one of Delhi's most prestigious South Delhi neighbourhoods — adjacent to the historic Hauz Khas Village complex of medieval Islamic architecture and reservoir, dating to the 13th-century Delhi Sultanate of Alauddin Khilji), is India's second-most prestigious IIT and ranked #197 in QS 2025. IIT Delhi was formally established in 1961 and was granted the status of Institute of National Importance in 1963. IIT Delhi's location in India's capital city gives it unique advantages — proximity to government ministries, regulatory bodies, think tanks, and the diplomatic community in New Delhi. IIT Delhi is particularly prominent in computer science, electrical engineering, and management education (Department of Management Studies, DMS IIT Delhi — one of India's highly regarded management programs). IIT Delhi alumni hold leadership positions across India's tech industry, civil service, and international institutions.
